Connecting the Code: Transitioning from Spanish Reading to English Reading   (View any scheduled events)

For many students in transitional bilingual programs, the shift from Spanish to English reading is abrupt. This session will explore the creation of a gradual transition, one where students begin to experience English oral language and early reading skills at the same time that they receive Spanish reading. Specific connections will be drawn between the languages so that participants can understand how the learning in Spanish can support the learning in English when clear connections are drawn for the students. Specifically we will look at research on the transferability of phonemic awareness, phonics/decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension from the first language to the second. Participants will hear about specific research projects underway that are exploring connecting the codes of Spanish and English as early as first grade for transitional bilingual students. Participants will discuss a variety of issues related to bilingual reading programs.

DIBELS Analysis/Fluency   (View any scheduled events)

DIBELS were developed to measure recognized and empirically validated skills related to reading outcomes. Each measure has been thoroughly researched and demonstrated to be reliable and valid indicators of early literacy development and predictive of later reading proficiency to aid in the early identification of students who are not progressing as expected. When used as recommended, the results can be used to evaluate individual student development as well as provide grade-level feedback toward validated instructional objectives.

DIBELS Data Analysis: Looking Beyond the Number to Plan for Targeted Instruction   (View any scheduled events)

The early literacy assessment, Dynamic Indicators for Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS), is an efficient way to determine which student may be at risk in reading. Many schools are using DIBELS screening assessments to place students in intervention programs. This session will teach participants how to take it even further. Educators will examine some of the DIBELS documents to help pinpoint strengths and weaknesses in their reading systems and help analyze individual student performances, looking past the number to specific strengths and gaps related to accuracy and automaticity. Each participant will walk away with a thorough understanding of the purpose behind each of the DIBELS sub-skills and how to use every piece of information available to plan for instruction that is targeted to individual student needs.
